Verdict:Upwork's costs are easy to underestimate. Freelancers pay a variable service fee of up to 15% per contract, set when you submit the proposal, and bidding uses Connects, which cost $0.15 each beyond the 10 that Basic accounts get monthly. Check Upwork's own pricing pages for current figures. Clients pay their own marketplace fee too. The alternatives trade volume for lower fees. Contra and Braintrust are the two that charge freelancers no commission, but both have far fewer jobs, so expect to bring clients with you or accept slower starts. Freelancer.com keeps a big job volume and takes 10% or $5, though a free member gets only 6 bids a month. Fiverr works in the opposite direction: you publish a gig and wait for buyers, and it keeps 20%, which is higher than Upwork's range. PeoplePerHour rewards repeat clients, because its fee falls as you bill the same buyer more. The practical trade-off is where the work comes from. If most of your income depends on Upwork's search and invitations, lower fees elsewhere will not help until you have a pipeline. Leave once you have regular clients you can move off-platform; stay while you still need discovery.

Upwork today: Free (Free to join; Basic includes 10 Connects a month, extra Connects $0.15 each; freelancer fee is variable, 0 to 15% per contract) (Upwork pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Upwork alternatives

Upwork is free to join, but the Basic plan includes only 10 Connects a month, extra Connects cost $0.15 each, and the freelancer fee is variable at 0 to 15% per contract. Freelancers therefore pay to bid and again when they win work, and clients who hire through the platform pay on top. Both sides weigh those costs against alternatives that charge differently or let you work directly.

Contra

Compared with Upwork: Free plan with 0% commission, and Pro is $29 a month or $199 a year. Upwork charges freelancers up to 15% per contract. Contra's client base is smaller and skews toward design and creative work.

Price: Free (Free plan; 0% commission); paid from $29 per month (Pro; $199 a year) (Contra pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web browser. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: Independent creatives wanting no commission.

Braintrust

Compared with Upwork: Free to join, with $0 fees for talent; clients pay a 15% platform fee on top. Strong for tech and design contracts, but it has fewer small jobs than Upwork.

Best for: Tech freelancers on larger contracts.

Worth knowing: Clients pay a 15% platform fee on top of the agreed rate.

Freelancer.com

Compared with Upwork: Free to join with 6 bids a month on the free membership; freelancers pay 10% or $5 per fixed-price project. It has a large job volume like Upwork, but quality of listings varies widely.

Price: Free (Free to join; free members get 6 bids a month; freelancers pay 10% or $5 per fixed-price project, whichever is greater) (Freelancer.com pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web browser. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: Volume bidding on many small projects.

Worth knowing: Employers pay 3% or $3 per awarded fixed-price project.

Fiverr

Compared with Upwork: Free to join, but Fiverr takes a 20% commission from sellers. You list fixed-price gigs instead of bidding on jobs, which avoids buying Connects but means clients come to you via search.

Price: Free (Free to join; Fiverr keeps 20% commission from sellers; buyers pay a service fee of 5.5% plus a small-order surcharge) (Fiverr pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web browser. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: Productized services with set prices.

PeoplePerHour

Compared with Upwork: No sign-up fee; fees step down from 20% on the first GBP 250 billed per client to 3.5% above GBP 5,000. UK-leaning, so the buyer pool is narrower than Upwork's.

Price: Free (No sign-up fee; freelancer fee 20% on the first GBP 250 billed per client, 7.5% up to GBP 5,000, 3.5% above) (PeoplePerHour pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web browser. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: UK and EU clients on repeat work.

Toptal

Compared with Upwork: Its pricing page states a $0 recruiting fee and a fixed weekly price, and gives no public rates. You lose Upwork's open marketplace and low entry cost, but the talent is pre-screened rather than self-listed.

Price: See pricing page (Toptal pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
