Verdict:Play.ht's plans change often, so check its pricing page for current prices; this page quotes none. What the listings agree on is a free tier and a paid Creator plan, but the numbers differ, so check the live page before comparing. If you need a hosted replacement, ElevenLabs has a free plan with 10,000 credits a month, and its commercial licence appears to start on Starter at $6 a month. Fish Audio's free plan is 8,000 credits a month and Plus costs $11 a month for commercial use. For developers, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech has a monthly free allowance of 1M Neural2 characters, and needs a billing account. If you want to stop paying per character, Kokoro (Apache-2.0) and Chatterbox (MIT) are open-source models you run yourself, with voice cloning in Chatterbox's case. Speechify is aimed at listening, not at producing finished voiceovers, so it only fits a narrow need. The trade-off is quality and convenience against cost. Hosted services give a studio and an API without setup, but meter usage. Local models are free and private but need a capable machine and some technical comfort. Stay with Play.ht if its voices and API already work in your pipeline.
