Good fit if

  • You need to crawl thousands of static pages (Scrapy is the pick)
  • The site only shows data after JavaScript runs (Playwright is the pick)
  • You work in Node.js and want queues and retries (Crawlee is the pick)
  • You want clean Markdown for an AI pipeline (Crawl4AI is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You cannot host, patch and back up a server yourself and want a vendor to run it

Open-source web scrapers differ mainly in how they get the page. Scrapy is a Python framework that fetches HTML directly and handles queues, throttling and export, and it is the efficient answer for large crawls of static sites. Crawlee covers the Node.js world and can switch between plain HTTP and a real browser. When a site builds its content with JavaScript, you need a browser: Playwright and Puppeteer drive Chromium (and Playwright also drives Firefox and WebKit), which is slower and uses more memory but sees what a visitor sees. Crawl4AI and Firecrawl target a newer job, turning pages into clean Markdown for AI pipelines; Crawl4AI is a Python library with a hosted free tier of 1,000 credits per month, and Firecrawl offers 1,000 free credits plus a self-hostable AGPL core. The trade-off is cost per page versus coverage: HTTP-only crawling is cheap and fast but breaks on dynamic pages, while browser-based scraping works almost everywhere but multiplies infrastructure. Whatever you pick, read the site's terms and robots.txt, rate-limit your requests, and avoid personal data you have no right to collect. Legality depends on the site and your country, so this is not legal advice.
