Speech recognition used to mean cloud services; now several strong models run on your own machine, which matters if recordings are private or you want no per-minute charge. Whisper from OpenAI is the reference: MIT-licensed, multilingual and accurate, though the plain Python package is slow without a GPU. Whisper.cpp and faster-whisper exist for that reason. Whisper.cpp is a C and C++ port that runs on ordinary computers, and faster-whisper is a reimplementation aimed at speed. Vosk targets small offline models for apps and embedded devices, trading some accuracy for size and real-time streaming. Kaldi is a research toolkit that powers a lot of academic and production systems, but it is a framework, not an app, and it expects you to know speech processing. Buzz wraps Whisper in a desktop application for people who do not want a terminal. The choice turns on whether you need real-time dictation or batch transcription of files. Streaming favors Vosk and some Whisper variants with careful setup, while recorded interviews favor Whisper or faster-whisper with a larger model. Accuracy also depends heavily on audio quality, accents and the model size you can afford to run, so test your own recordings before judging. These tools give you text, not speaker labels or an editing interface unless you add them.
MIT-licensed multilingual speech recognition model and Python package from OpenAI. Accurate for batch files, but slow on a plain CPU with the larger models.
