Verdict:MyCase lists its Basic plan at $50 per user a month billed annually and offers no free plan, only a trial. If you are a solo lawyer with a handful of matters that is a lot to pay before you have revenue, and the free options are small but real. CaseFox has a free plan for 2 users and 4 active cases with no card, then Professional at $45 per user a month. HoudiniESQ gives solo practitioners a free perpetual license for one user, but it runs on-premise only, so you handle installation and backups yourself. Those two are the places to look if your goal is to pay nothing. If you will pay anyway, the question is only fit. Clio Starter at $49 and PracticePanther Solo at $49 billed annually are within a dollar of MyCase, so switching to either saves almost nothing; do it for a feature you need, such as a bigger integration list. Smokeball shows no price and asks for a quote, which makes comparison harder. The trade-off for the free tools is capacity: four cases is a short runway, and moving later means exporting every client file. Stay with MyCase if you already depend on its client portal and billing together, and leave it when you are a one-person firm that can live inside a free tier for the first year.
