Verdict:Clio's US plans start at $49 per user a month on Starter, with Core, Signature and Elite above it; check its pricing page for higher-tier prices. There are few free options in legal practice management, and they come with limits. CaseFox has a free Solo plan with four cases and two users, which fits a lawyer with a small caseload. HoudiniEsq has a free license for a solo practitioner, but it is on-premise, so you handle the computer, backups and security, which matters for client files. Beyond that, MyCase and PracticePanther list prices close to Clio's, from $50 and $49 per user a month on annual billing, so switching is about workflow, not saving money. Smokeball publishes no numbers. The trade-off is migration: matter history, time entries, billing and trust accounting records have to be moved or kept somewhere, and we did not test any import from Clio. Rules for client money and records are set by your bar, so check what your jurisdiction requires before changing where files and trust records live. Use the free trials, 10 days for MyCase and 7 for PracticePanther, on a copy of a few matters before committing.
