Good fit if

  • You are installing Windows from a USB stick (Rufus is the pick)
  • You want a no-fuss way to flash a Linux ISO (balenaEtcher is the pick)
  • You carry several installers and rescue disks (Ventoy is the pick)
  • You still burn DVDs on Windows (ImgBurn is the pick)
  • You use KDE Linux and an optical drive (K3b is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Today most people who want to burn an ISO are really making a bootable USB stick, and the tools split along that line. Rufus formats a USB drive and writes a Windows or Linux installer from an ISO, runs without installing and needs Windows 8 or later. balenaEtcher does the same job with a simpler interface on Windows, macOS and Linux, and Ventoy turns one USB stick into a multi-boot drive where you copy ISO files and choose at startup. If you actually have an optical drive, ImgBurn burns CD, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray on Windows, AnyBurn Free adds a lighter option for data discs and bootable USB, and K3b is the burning application for KDE on Linux. The trade-off is simplicity against flexibility. Etcher has fewer options and a smaller chance of picking the wrong settings, while Rufus and Ventoy expose boot and partition choices that matter for newer PCs with Secure Boot. Whichever you choose, double-check the target drive before you write, since the stick or disc is erased, and verify the ISO checksum from the distributor so a corrupted download does not cost you an hour.
