Free calling apps are free in different ways, and the difference matters when the other person is not on the same app. Signal and Telegram give free voice and video calls over the internet, but only to people who also have the app; Signal is run by a nonprofit and encrypts calls by default, and Telegram supports group calls of up to 200 participants. Jitsi Meet needs no account for browser meetings, which is handy for one-off group calls, though meetings on the public meet.jit.si server are now limited to 95 minutes. Discord is built for communities and has always-on voice channels. If you need to reach ordinary phone numbers, look at TextNow and Google Voice instead: TextNow gives a free number with ads, and Google Voice offers a basic personal plan but needs an existing mobile number to set up. The trade-off is reach versus privacy and cost. Apps that call real phone numbers usually carry ads or restrictions, while private internet-only apps cost nothing but work only if your contacts install them too. Pick one app for friends and family, and add a number-based option for the occasional call to a business.
