Good fit if

  • You have a handful of simple automations (Zapier is the pick)
  • You want more steps and no per-task panic (Make is the pick)
  • You want to self-host with a friendly UI (Activepieces is the pick)
  • You automate devices or local services (Node-RED is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

An automation tool connects your apps so that one event, such as a new form entry, triggers actions elsewhere, and the free plans are measured in tasks or credits. Zapier's free plan allows 100 tasks a month, which is quick to exhaust once a workflow has several steps. Make gives 1,000 credits a month, Activepieces 1,000 credits with unlimited flows and up to 5 users, and Pipedream has a free plan limited to development use, not production. The self-hosted route removes the meter: Activepieces' Community Edition is MIT, Node-RED is Apache-2.0 and Kestra is Apache-2.0, while n8n's Community Edition is free to self-host under the Sustainable Use License, which is source-available rather than open source. Pick Zapier when you value its large app catalogue and can stay under 100 tasks. Pick Make or Activepieces for visual multi-step workflows on a bigger free allowance. Pick Node-RED if your automations touch devices or need code, and Kestra for data pipelines you want to define in YAML. The trade-off is time: a self-hosted tool runs only as long as your server does, and you handle backups, upgrades and security patches yourself.
