Verdict:Zotero is already free and open source, so this page is about other good options rather than escapes. The software is AGPL-3.0, and the only thing it charges for is file sync beyond the free 300 MB; 2 GB costs $20 a year. That makes it hard to beat on price. Reasons to look elsewhere are specific. If you write in LaTeX and keep references in a.bib file, JabRef is built around that format and is MIT-licensed. If you already work in Google Docs all day, Paperpile fits that workflow better and costs from $4.15 a month after a 30-day trial. Mendeley is free and popular for reading and annotating PDFs, with sharing in groups, though it belongs to Elsevier and is not open source, so check its storage terms. EndNote is the one your institution may already license; there is a trial, and you should check the price with your institution. The trade-off is lock-in and ecosystem. Zotero has plug-ins, styles and a large community, and moving a library out means testing export and citation styles. If sync storage is your only complaint, 2 GB at $20 a year is cheaper than switching tools. Move only if you need a LaTeX-native tool or a Docs-first workflow.

Zotero today: Free (The software is free; 300 MB of free file storage for sync); paid from $20 per year (2 GB storage plan) (Zotero pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Zotero's free account includes 300 MB of file storage. Beyond that, 2 GB costs $20 a year, 6 GB $60 and unlimited $120. Group library files count against the group owner's storage, not the members', so a shared project can exhaust one person's quota.
Compared with Zotero: MIT-licensed, free reference manager built on BibTeX files. Better for LaTeX workflows than Zotero; it lacks Zotero's browser connector polish and its cloud sync.
