Verdict:Wireshark is already free, so the reason to look elsewhere is fit, not price. Its page lists Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD and NetBSD support and asks for donations. If your problem is running a capture on a remote server with no desktop, tcpdump is the standard answer: BSD-licensed, command-line only, and you can save a capture and open it in Wireshark later. If you want continuous visibility rather than a one-time capture, Zeek turns traffic into structured logs and Suricata alerts on rules. ntopng gives a web dashboard of who is talking to whom, with a free Community edition under GPLv3 and paid Pro at 299 EUR. Security Onion bundles Suricata, Zeek and more into a monitoring platform, and it is heavy for a single laptop. The trade-off is that none of these let you click into a packet and follow a TCP stream as Wireshark does. Most people end up using both: tcpdump or Zeek to collect, Wireshark to inspect. Keep Wireshark for troubleshooting a specific problem. Add the others when you need monitoring that runs without you watching.

Wireshark today: Free (Free to download; project asks for donations) (Wireshark pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Most reasons to look beyond Wireshark are about what it can capture, not price. Its FAQ says capture depends on libpcap or Npcap and the operating system, so some Windows adapters cannot be captured at all, and 802.11 monitor mode needs raw-802.11 Npcap support plus a cooperating driver. On a switched network you see only your own unicast traffic unless the switch mirrors a port, and most systems never pass frames with bad CRCs to the capture tool.
Compared with Wireshark: BSD-3-Clause command-line packet capture built on libpcap, found on Linux, macOS, BSD and Windows with Npcap. No GUI like Wireshark's, but it runs on a headless server.
Price: Free (free, open source) (tcpdump pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, BSD, Windows. BSD-3-Clause (open source).
Project activity: 3.3k GitHub stars · last commit Oct 21, 2026
Best for: Capturing packets on servers over SSH.
Worth knowing: Command-line packet capture built on libpcap; Windows needs Npcap or WinPcap.
Compared with Wireshark: BSD-licensed network analysis framework with a scripting language. It turns traffic into protocol logs rather than letting you browse packets, which suits monitoring but not one-off debugging.
Price: Free (free, open source) (Zeek pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Linux, Unix. BSD (open source).
Project activity: 8.1k GitHub stars · latest release v9.0.1 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Long-term traffic logging and analysis.
Worth knowing: Network analysis framework with a scripting language; produces logs, not a packet viewer.
Compared with Wireshark: GPL-2.0 intrusion detection and prevention engine and network security monitor. It alerts on rules rather than displaying packets, so it complements Wireshark rather than replacing it.
Price: Free (free, open source) (Suricata pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Linux, Unix. GPL-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 6.8k GitHub stars · latest release suricata-8.0.7 (Sep 15, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Rule-based detection on network traffic.
Worth knowing: IDS, IPS and network security monitoring engine.
Compared with Wireshark: Community edition is free under GPLv3 for traffic monitoring; Pro is 299 EUR and Enterprise starts at 699 EUR. A traffic dashboard instead of a packet dissector like Wireshark.
Price: Free (Community edition is free) (ntopng pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Linux, Windows, macOS. GPL-3.0 (Community) (open source).
Project activity: 8.3k GitHub stars · latest release 7.0 (Sep 22, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Web dashboard of network traffic.
Compared with Wireshark: Free platform that bundles Suricata, Zeek, Elastic Agent and osquery; a paid Pro edition exists. Much heavier to run than Wireshark, built for a team monitoring a network.
Price: Free (free platform; a paid Pro edition exists) (Security Onion pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Linux (ISO), AWS, Azure, Google Cloud. Elastic License 2.0.
Best for: A full monitoring stack for a SOC.
Worth knowing: Bundles Suricata, Zeek, Elastic Agent and osquery; heavier to run than a single agent.
Compared with Wireshark: Windows network forensics tool with a free edition for live sniffing and PCAP parsing, file and credential extraction. Professional is listed at $1,300 and adds executable defanging and USB delivery.
Price: Free (Free edition: live sniffing, PCAP parsing, IPv6, file and credential extraction, OS fingerprinting, JA3); paid from $1300 per Professional edition, listed price (NetworkMiner pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
Compared with Wireshark: HTTP debugging proxy for macOS, Windows and Linux, narrower than Wireshark's full packet view. Standard is $89 one time for one seat with a year of updates; the free trial lacks breakpoints and SSL tools.
Price: Free (Trial for evaluation: one debugging tools rule; no iOS/Android app, Breakpoint, Map Local/Remote, Scripting, Diff or SSL tools); paid from $89 per one-time, Standard, 1 seat, one year of updates (Proxyman pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
Docs-only for tcpdump, Zeek, Suricata, ntopng, Security Onion: we did not install or run them, so feature claims come from vendor pages and we did not test import from Wireshark. Vendor prices and free limits change; confirm on the linked pricing page before you buy or migrate.
