Verdict:Leave Wallpaper Engine if you are not on Windows or want a free, open-source option. It is a Steam purchase for Windows 10 and 11, and our fetch showed a regional price while search snippets showed older prices around $3.99, so we do not quote a number. Lively Wallpaper is the closest free swap on Windows: GPL-3.0, with no features behind a paywall, and it handles videos, GIFs and web pages. ScreenPlay is open source too and runs on Windows and macOS, with some wallpaper types marked Pro. Hidamari covers Linux, which Wallpaper Engine does not. Rainmeter is a different tool, desktop skins and system widgets, so pair it with a video wallpaper app rather than expecting one-for-one. DeskScapes is a paid Stardock app with a free trial. The trade-off is the library. Wallpaper Engine's Steam Workshop has a large catalogue and tooling, and free alternatives usually mean importing your own videos or building wallpapers. Check performance as well, since all animated wallpapers use CPU and GPU, and most apps let you pause them when a game or full-screen app runs. Stay if you use Workshop content; switch if you want free and open.

Why people look for Wallpaper Engine alternatives

Wallpaper Engine's site lists Windows 10 and 11 only, plus a free Android companion app that receives wallpapers from a Windows PC. It is a one-time purchase sold through Steam or Green Man Gaming, and wallpapers arrive through Steam Workshop subscriptions, so Steam is needed to download or upload wallpapers and install updates. Wallpapers pause while a game or maximized app is in use. Mac and Linux users have no official version.
