Verdict:Twilio's list prices start at $0.0083 per US SMS and $0.014 per outbound voice minute, and the main reason to leave is to cut those numbers or to stop paying a platform on top of the carrier. For hosted APIs, Telnyx and Plivo are the closest drop-in swaps, with lower listed per-message and per-minute rates, though you will rewrite your integration. SignalWire is worth a look for voice because it comes from the people behind FreeSWITCH. If you want to stop renting entirely, the free route is self-hosting: Asterisk or FreeSWITCH for a phone system, or jambonz if you want a programmable layer closer to Twilio's. Be honest about the cost of that: none of them sells you phone numbers or SMS, so you still need a carrier or SIP trunk, and you take on uptime, security patches and compliance such as US A2P 10DLC registration yourself. For a small app sending a few thousand texts a month, the savings rarely repay the engineering time, and staying on Twilio or moving to Telnyx is the lower-risk option. Self-hosting starts paying off when voice minutes are your main cost and someone on the team already knows SIP. Also check the extra Twilio products you rely on, such as Verify or Flex, which have no one-to-one replacements here.

Why people look for Twilio alternatives

Twilio is billed per use: messages start at $0.0083 each to send or receive, and voice at $0.0085 per minute inbound and $0.014 outbound. Those are starting rates only. Phone-number, carrier and 10DLC registration fees sit on separate linked pages, and volume discounts are not itemised, so a full monthly cost is hard to estimate before building. A free trial needs no credit card.

Asterisk

Compared with Twilio: Asterisk is a free GPL-2.0 PBX toolkit you run yourself. It replaces Twilio's voice features with no per-minute platform fee, but you supply the server and a SIP trunk, and SMS is not part of it. Expect real telephony admin work.

Price: Free (free open-source PBX toolkit; you supply the server and a SIP trunk) (Asterisk pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 3.6k GitHub stars · latest release certified-22.8-cert5 (Oct 19, 2026) · last commit Oct 26, 2026

Best for: Teams that want to own their phone system.

Worth knowing: Toolkit rather than a finished phone product; FreePBX is a common web GUI on top.

FreeSWITCH

Compared with Twilio: FreeSWITCH is an MPL-1.1 open-source telecom stack that handles voice, conferencing and routing on your own hardware. Compared with Twilio you lose the hosted API and number inventory, and gain full control and no platform markup.

Price: Free (free open-source telecom stack; you supply the server and carrier connection) (FreeSWITCH pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, Windows, macOS, BSD. MPL-1.1 (open source).

Project activity: 5.3k GitHub stars · latest release v1.11.3 (Aug 28, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Developers building custom voice infrastructure.

Worth knowing: Switch, not a hosted API. Debian copyright file in the repo lists MPL-1.1. SignalWire is its primary sponsor.

jambonz

Compared with Twilio: jambonz is an MIT-licensed open-source platform you host, meant to give Twilio-style programmable voice control. You bring your own SIP carrier and run MySQL, Redis and InfluxDB yourself, so setup is heavier than signing up for Twilio.

Price: Free (open-source platform; you run it and bring your own SIP carrier) (jambonz pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 25 GitHub stars · last commit Oct 23, 2026

Best for: Self-hosting voice apps and AI voice agents.

Worth knowing: License checked on the jambonz-api-server repo. Needs MySQL, Redis and InfluxDB per its README.

Plivo

Compared with Twilio: Plivo gives $10 in trial credit with no card and lists outbound voice from $0.0010 per minute, below Twilio's $0.014 outbound US rate. Its SMS starts at $0.0077 on the Enterprise listing. Smaller ecosystem than Twilio.

Price: Free ($10 free trial credit, no credit card required) (Plivo pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web API. Proprietary.

Best for: Teams that mainly want cheaper voice minutes.

Telnyx

Compared with Twilio: Telnyx lists outbound SMS from $0.004 per message, under Twilio's $0.0083, and owns its network. Pay-as-you-go has a $0 minimum, and a US local number is $1.00 a month. You lose Twilio's wider tutorials and community.

Price: Free (free trial credit with no card required; pay-as-you-go has a $0 monthly minimum) (Telnyx pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web API. Proprietary.

Best for: Cost-sensitive SMS and SIP workloads.

Worth knowing: Outbound SMS from $0.004 per message; a US local number is $1.00/month. Committed plans start at $500/month.

SignalWire

Compared with Twilio: SignalWire has US local SMS at $0.00415 per segment and local numbers at $0.50 a month, both below Twilio's headline rates. It comes from the FreeSWITCH creators, and offers no free trial credit.

Price: See pricing page (SignalWire pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web API. Proprietary.

Best for: Voice-heavy apps that want FreeSWITCH roots.

Worth knowing: US local SMS $0.00415 per segment; programmable voice local $0.00660 inbound and $0.00800 outbound per minute; local number $0.50/month.

Bird

Compared with Twilio: Lists US outbound long-code SMS at $0.0035 per segment pay as you go, against Twilio's $0.0083 starting rate per message. Carrier fees are charged separately, and email runs from a free tier or a $15 Startup plan.

Price: Free (Email has a free sending tier; limits are not stated on the pricing page); paid from $0.0035 per US outbound long-code SMS segment, pay as you go (Bird pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

Nextiva

Compared with Twilio: A ready-made business phone system rather than an API: NEXT Core is $15 per user monthly, NEXT Engage $25 and NEXT Scale $75. You get calling without building on per-minute voice rates, but less programmability.

Price: Paid from $15 per user/month, NEXT Core, annual small-business term (Nextiva pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
