Verdict:Leave TestRail if per-seat pricing is hard to justify for a small QA team or if you want test cases under your own control. TestRail's pricing page lists Essentials at $22 per user a month for up to five users, Professional at $38 and Enterprise at $78, all billed annually, with a 30-day trial and no permanent free plan. Kiwi TCMS is the strongest free option if you can run Docker: it is GPL-2.0 and carries no seat fees, though you handle hosting and updates. TestLink is also free and self-hosted, but its README says it depends on one maintainer in spare time, so treat it as a stable older tool and not a fast-moving product. Qase and Testiny give hosted free plans, capped at 4 and 3 users respectively, which is enough for a small team to try workflows before paying. Testmo charges a flat $59 a month for five users, which can work out cheaper than TestRail once the team grows past a handful. The trade-off is integrations and reporting depth: TestRail is the established standard and many teams already have Jira links and exports built around it. Start with Qase or Kiwi TCMS on one project and compare import options before moving all your cases.

Not ideal if

TestRail today: Paid from $22 per user per month (Essentials, up to 5 users, billed annually) (TestRail pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for TestRail alternatives

TestRail's Essentials plan is $22 per user a month billed annually but is limited to 5 users and cloud only. Professional is $38 and Enterprise $78. On-premise hosting needs Professional or higher, at least 10 seats and a 12-month minimum contract. SSO, audit logs, test case versioning and approvals, and automatic daily backups are Enterprise features, as is 500 GB storage against 50 GB on lower plans. API limits are 180 requests a minute on Professional and 300 on Enterprise.

Kiwi TCMS

Compared with TestRail: GPL-2.0 test management you host yourself with Docker, so no per-user fee. You lose TestRail's hosted service and some polish, and take on upgrades and backups.
