Verdict:Leave Storybook if its configuration, build time and addon upgrades cost more attention than the component work itself. Storybook is MIT-licensed and free, so cost is rarely the reason; weight and speed are. Ladle is the closest to a drop-in for React teams that want the story format with a quicker Vite-based dev server, though it supports React only. Histoire is the pick for Vue, Svelte or Nuxt shops, since it covers those frameworks, but its README requires Node.js 22 or newer and a recent Vite. React Cosmos suits people who want an isolated sandbox without a documentation site on top. React Styleguidist is a documentation-first option built from Markdown and component props, but check its recent releases before betting on it. Playroom answers a different need: designers and engineers composing screens from an existing component library in JSX. The trade-off is ecosystem. Storybook has the broadest framework support, accessibility and interaction-testing addons, and the most community answers, and none of these match it feature for feature. Migration also means rewriting stories if you leave the CSF format. Stay if you rely on its addons or visual-testing workflow. Try Ladle on a copy of your React project first and see if the missing addons matter.
