Verdict:Proton Mail's free plan is small: 500 MB at the start, rising to 1 GB once you finish a setup checklist. Mail Plus is $3.99 a month billed annually, and Proton Unlimited is $9.99. If you want to leave because of space, Gmail gives 15 GB free and Zoho Mail gives 5 GB per user for up to five people on your own domain, which Proton's free tier does not allow. If you want to keep encrypted mail but pay less, Tuta's free plan has 1 GB, one calendar and three labels, which is the nearest like-for-like swap. The cost is that Tuta, like Proton, has no custom domain on the free tier. Fastmail is a different bet: no free plan, $5 per user a month billed annually, but custom domains and a plain mail focus, with a trial of up to 30 days. iCloud Mail makes sense only if you already use Apple devices. The trade-off is privacy against capacity. Gmail and Zoho are more generous in space and domain support, while Proton and Tuta keep the encryption model. Moving also means exporting mail and updating every account that sends to your old address, so keep Proton active for a few months while you switch.
