Verdict:Leave Portainer if its Business Edition prompts, node limits or heavy interface feel like more than your homelab or small team needs. Portainer Community Edition is zlib-licensed and free, but the repository describes it as meant for homelabs, learning and non-production use, while Business Edition starts at $1,045 a year for 5 to 15 nodes. Dockge is the nearest focused replacement if your world is Docker Compose files, because it edits the same compose.yaml you already keep. Coolify, CapRover and Dokku shift the goal from watching containers to deploying apps; pick Coolify for a full dashboard with databases, CapRover for one-click apps, Dokku for pure command-line workflow. Podman Desktop is the choice when containers run on your own laptop instead of a server. CasaOS offers a gentle app store for home use. The trade-off is scope: none of these matches Portainer's mix of Docker, Swarm and Kubernetes management with role-based access in one console. If you run Kubernetes clusters with several teams, Portainer's paid tier may still be the shortest path. If you run a handful of Compose stacks on one box, try Dockge first and move on only if you need more.

Good fit if

  • You run Docker Compose stacks on a home server (Dockge is the pick)
  • You want to deploy apps straight from Git (Coolify is the pick)
  • You prefer a terminal-driven git push workflow (Dokku is the pick)
  • You manage containers only on your own laptop (Podman Desktop is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Portainer features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Portainer today: Free (Community Edition is free; Business Edition has a 3-node free offer on the pricing page); paid from $1045 per year (Business Starter, 5, 10 or 15 nodes, billed annually) (Portainer pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Portainer alternatives

Portainer's paid tier is priced per node. Business Starter is $1,045 a year for 5, 10 or 15 nodes, limited to one license per company, with community support and up to 16 vCPUs per node. Scale is $2,095 a year for 5 to 25 nodes with next-business-day support, and larger setups go to custom Enterprise pricing. A free Business license covers 3 nodes. The Community Edition repository says that edition is intended for homelabs, learning and non-production use, so teams running production containers have to move to a paid plan.

Dockge

Compared with Portainer: MIT-licensed web UI focused on Docker Compose stacks you edit as files. Smaller than Portainer, with no Kubernetes or team access control, but easier to reason about for homelabs.

Price: Free (Dockge pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 24.7k GitHub stars · latest release 1.5.0 (Mar 30, 2025) · last commit Oct 23, 2026

Best for: Managing Compose stacks.

Worth knowing: Self-hosted web UI for managing Docker Compose stacks through compose.yaml files. Needs Docker 20 or newer, or Podman. Windows is not supported yet.

Coolify

Compared with Portainer: Apache-2.0 self-hosted platform that deploys apps and databases from Git. It does more than Portainer's container view, so expect a bigger install and a different workflow.

Price: Free (self-hosted is free forever); paid from $5 per month, Coolify Cloud base (includes 2 servers) (Coolify pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Coolify Cloud. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 65.1k GitHub stars · latest release v4.5.1 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Self-hosted Heroku-style deploys.

Worth knowing: Deploys over SSH using Docker, Compose or Nixpacks.

CapRover

Compared with Portainer: Apache-2.0 PaaS on top of Docker that deploys apps with a web dashboard and one-click apps. Not a general container manager like Portainer, but quicker for deploying web apps.

Price: Free (CapRover pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted (Docker). Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 15.2k GitHub stars · latest release v1.15.5 (Oct 23, 2026) · last commit Oct 26, 2026

Best for: One-click app deployments.

Worth knowing: Docker plus nginx PaaS with a web UI.

Dokku

Compared with Portainer: MIT-licensed mini-PaaS driven from the command line with git push deploys. No graphical dashboard to match Portainer, which suits you only if you like the terminal.

Price: Free (Dokku pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Ubuntu 22.04/24.04/26.04, Debian 11+. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 32.2k GitHub stars · latest release v0.38.32 (Oct 25, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Git push deploys on one server.

Worth knowing: Single-host Docker PaaS driven by git push.

Podman Desktop

Compared with Portainer: Apache-2.0 desktop app for managing containers and pods on your own machine. Unlike Portainer it is a local GUI, not a server-side web console for remote hosts.

Price: Free (Free and open source; no paid plan on the page) (Podman Desktop pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 8.1k GitHub stars · latest release v1.30.5 (Oct 13, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Local container management without Docker.

Worth knowing: Homepage calls it the free and open source tool for containers and Kubernetes. Runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.

CasaOS

Compared with Portainer: Apache-2.0 home-server dashboard with an app store for containers. Friendlier than Portainer for beginners, though with less control over networks and advanced settings.

Price: Free (Free and open source) (CasaOS pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Ubuntu, Debian, Raspberry Pi OS, CentOS. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 37.4k GitHub stars · latest release v0.4.15 (Dec 19, 2024) · last commit Sep 28, 2026

Best for: Beginner home servers.

Worth knowing: Docker-based personal cloud with app store; the site notes CasaOS has been upgraded to ZimaOS. Runs on amd64, armv7 and arm64.

Dokploy

Compared with Portainer: Priced per server instead of per node: Hobby is $4.50 a month per server and Startup starts at $15 a month with up to 3 servers and unlimited users, against Portainer Business at $1,045 a year for 5 nodes.

Price: Paid from $4.5 per month per server (Hobby) (Dokploy pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
