Verdict:Plex's free server streams to devices on your home network, but remote streaming needs a Plex Pass or the lower-cost Remote Watch Pass, which renews at $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year after June 1, 2026; check the Plex plans page for Plex Pass prices. Plex also announced a higher lifetime price, though that figure did not appear on the pages we could load. If the cost of remote access is why you are looking, Jellyfin is the natural answer: it is GPL-2.0, has no paid tier, and runs on Linux, Docker, Windows and macOS. The cost is app polish. Jellyfin's apps are improving but are less polished than Plex's, and there is no hosted sign-in service to find your server for friends, so you will set up your own remote access. Emby is the closest in behaviour if you want a paid tier and are happy to pay once with the $119 lifetime option. Kodi suits a single TV and a local library rather than sharing with family. Universal Media Server is for plain DLNA playback on smart TVs. Navidrome is for music only. This page covers only legal ways to serve media you own or have the right to use. Before switching, check which of your devices have a Jellyfin or Emby app, since that decides the choice more than features do.

Good fit if

  • No subscription and open source (Jellyfin is the pick)
  • Closest to Plex with a one-off lifetime price (Emby is the pick)
  • Playback on a single TV (Kodi is the pick)
  • Simple DLNA sharing to smart TVs (Universal Media Server is the pick)
  • Streaming only my music collection (Navidrome is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Plex features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Plex today: Free (Plex Media Server streams to devices on your home network at no cost; remote streaming needs Plex Pass, Remote Watch Pass or a Plex Pass on the server admin account); paid from $2.99 per month (Remote Watch Pass, from June 1, 2026; $29.99 a year) (Plex pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Plex alternatives

Plex lets you stream to devices on your home network at no cost, but leaving the house costs money. Remote streaming of movies and TV needs a Plex Pass on the server admin's account or a Remote Watch Pass on yours, listed at $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year from June 1, 2026. Hardware transcoding, downloads, Skip Intro and Ultimate DVR are Plex Pass features. Users of the older mobile apps also face a one-minute playback limit unless they have Plex Pass or make a one-time in-app unlock purchase.

Jellyfin

Compared with Plex: Jellyfin is GPL-2.0 and free, with no subscription tier and no paid unlock for remote streaming. You gain free server features and lose Plex's polished apps and its simple remote-access sign-in; server downloads cover Linux, Docker, Windows and macOS.

Price: Free (Server and official clients are free with no subscription or paid tier) (Jellyfin pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, Windows, macOS, Docker. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 58.7k GitHub stars · latest release v12.4 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Free, open-source replacement with no accounts.

Emby

Compared with Plex: Emby Server runs without Premiere, and Premiere is $4.99 a month, $54 a year or $119 lifetime. It sits closest to Plex's model, with a paid tier for hardware transcoding, DVR and offline media, but its core is not open source.

Price: Free (Emby Server runs without Premiere; Premiere adds features such as hardware transcoding, DVR and offline media); paid from $4.99 per month (Emby Premiere; $54 a year or $119 lifetime) (Emby pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, NAS devices. Proprietary.

Best for: A Plex-like experience with a cheaper lifetime option.

Kodi

Compared with Plex: Kodi is GPL-2.0 and free, but it is a media centre app rather than a Plex-style streaming server. You lose easy remote streaming and per-user libraries and gain a customisable player for a single TV.

Price: Free (Free open-source media center; it plays and organizes media rather than acting as a Plex-style remote streaming server) (Kodi pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, tvOS. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Best for: One-room home theatre playback.

Universal Media Server

Compared with Plex: Universal Media Server is GPL-2.0 and shares media over DLNA, UPnP and HTTP(S) to devices on your network. It is much simpler than Plex, without Plex's metadata polish or remote streaming service, and runs on Windows, Linux and macOS.

Price: Free (GPL-2.0 DLNA/UPnP media server; the repository lists no price) (Universal Media Server pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, Linux, macOS. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 2.7k GitHub stars · latest release 15.8.2 (Sep 9, 2026) · last commit Oct 28, 2026

Best for: DLNA streaming to TVs on your home network.

Worth knowing: Shares media over DLNA, UPnP and HTTP(S) to devices on the network.

Compared with Plex: Navidrome is GPL-3.0 and free, but only handles music and audiobook libraries. If your Plex use is mostly music, it replaces Plexamp-style streaming through third-party iOS and Android apps, but it plays no video.

Price: Free (Free under the GPL v3; music (and audiobook) libraries only) (Navidrome pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Web browser. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 24.4k GitHub stars · latest release v0.64.2 (Sep 24, 2026) · last commit Oct 26, 2026

Best for: A music-only server.

Infuse

Compared with Plex: A player rather than a server: Pro is $1.99 a month, $16.99 a year or $99.99 lifetime, with a 7-day trial. It plays from Plex and Jellyfin libraries but runs only on Apple devices, so you still need a server.

Price: Free (Free to download; the page states no free-version limits); paid from $1.99 per month (Infuse Pro; $16.99 a year or $99.99 lifetime; 7-day free trial) (Infuse pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

Which one to pick

  • No subscription and open source: Jellyfin
  • Closest to Plex with a one-off lifetime price: Emby
  • Playback on a single TV: Kodi
  • Simple DLNA sharing to smart TVs: Universal Media Server
  • Streaming only my music collection: Navidrome
