Open-source ecommerce platforms give you a store you can host anywhere and change freely, but the software is only the start of the cost. You pay for hosting, payment setup, security patches, extensions and, usually, a developer. That makes them a better fit for stores with unusual needs or high volume than for a first shop selling ten products, where a hosted service is quicker. They split into two styles. WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Magento Open Source are full stores with themes and admin screens, WooCommerce adding to WordPress and the others standing alone. Medusa, Saleor, Sylius and Bagisto lean toward developers: Medusa and Saleor are headless, so you build the storefront yourself, while Sylius and Bagisto are frameworks on PHP and Laravel. Magento is the heaviest and has the most enterprise features, with matching hosting demands. WooCommerce is the lowest barrier, since many hosts install it in a click. Licenses matter less here than with other categories, but check which features are open and which sit in a paid cloud or enterprise layer. Decide first whether you want a ready storefront or a commerce engine, because that choice shapes the rest of the project.
