Good fit if
- You run Windows and want a moving background (Lively Wallpaper is the pick)
- You run Linux and want video wallpaper (Hidamari is the pick)
- You want fresh photos every day on Linux (Variety is the pick)
- You only need a sharp still image (Unsplash is the pick)
Not ideal if
- You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out
Searches for free wallpaper mean two different things: software that changes or animates your desktop background, and websites that hand out images you can set as one. Lively Wallpaper (Windows) and Hidamari (Linux) are free, open-source animated-wallpaper players, and Rainmeter adds widgets and skins on top of the desktop. Variety rotates still images on Linux and downloads new ones for you. For the pictures themselves, Unsplash and Pexels offer photographs under licenses that let you use them without payment. The trade-off is licensing detail. Unsplash does not let you sell the images unaltered or build a competing photo service, and Pexels forbids redistributing its files on other wallpaper platforms, which matters if you plan to publish your own collection rather than just set a background. Animated wallpapers also use graphics memory and battery, so on a laptop it helps to set them to pause when another window is full screen. Match the tool to the operating system you run, because most of the free software listed here supports only one.
