Good fit if

  • You want every retro console in one interface (RetroArch is the pick)
  • You want to play GameCube or Wii games (Dolphin is the pick)
  • You want PSP games on your phone (PPSSPP is the pick)
  • You only need Game Boy Advance on a weak laptop (mGBA is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Emulators are legal software, but the games you run in them need to come from cartridges and discs you own and dump yourself, and some systems also need a console BIOS you extract. With that said, the free options are strong. RetroArch is a front end that runs many 'cores' for older consoles through one interface, with shaders, rewind and controller setup in one place; the trade-off is a menu system that feels like a toolbox rather than a polished app. If you want the best performance on a single system, use a dedicated emulator: Dolphin for GameCube and Wii, PCSX2 for PlayStation 2, PPSSPP for PSP, melonDS for Nintendo DS and mGBA for Game Boy Advance. Dolphin, PCSX2 and melonDS are GPL-licensed, mGBA uses MPL-2.0, and PPSSPP is GPL 2.0 or later. Heavier systems such as GameCube and PS2 need a reasonably modern graphics card to run at upscaled resolution, while Game Boy and DS emulators run on almost anything, including phones. Check which operating systems each supports: PPSSPP and RetroArch reach Android and iOS, while PCSX2 and melonDS focus on desktops. Download only from the official project sites to avoid bundled malware.
