A duplicate file finder compares files by size and content, then lets you delete the extra copies, and the best free ones are open source. Czkawka is the friendliest: a graphical app for Windows, Linux and macOS that also finds empty folders and big files. dupeGuru is a Python and Qt graphical finder for the same three systems. rmlint and jdupes are command-line tools built for speed, rmlint aimed mainly at Linux and jdupes with a native Windows port; they suit people who script their cleanup. AllDup is a Windows freeware tool with many search options, and Auslogics Duplicate File Finder has a free tier that deletes to the Recycle Bin but keeps automatic selection for Pro. The trade-off is safety against speed. Automatic selection of which copy to keep is where people lose files: a program cannot know that the copy in an old backup folder is the one you wanted. Always send deletions to the Recycle Bin or compare by content first, scan only the folders you care about, and never point a finder at system folders or an app's data directory, where identical files are often supposed to be identical.
