Good fit if

  • You run a website and want fast, free DNS (Cloudflare is the pick)
  • You have one tiny domain (ClouDNS is the pick)
  • You need a name for a home server (DuckDNS is the pick)
  • You want to run your own DNS with a web console (Technitium DNS Server is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Free DNS means two different things, so decide which you need. The first is hosted DNS for your own domain, where a provider's name servers answer queries about your records. Cloudflare's free plan includes DNS along with DDoS protection, CDN and a universal SSL certificate, ClouDNS gives a free plan of 1 zone, 50 records and 500K queries a month, and Hurricane Electric's free DNS service supports multiple domains per account with no stated zone limit. The second is dynamic DNS, where a service keeps a name pointed at an address that changes. DuckDNS provides a free dynamic DNS subdomain, which suits a home server but does not host DNS for a domain you own. If you would rather run the name servers yourself, PowerDNS is a GPL-2.0 authoritative server and Technitium DNS Server is a GPL-3.0 server that is both authoritative and recursive, with DNS over HTTPS and a web console. Pick Cloudflare for most websites because the free plan is generous and fast to set up. Pick a self-hosted server when you need full control or an internal network. The trade-off is risk: your own DNS server must stay online and patched, since an outage takes your whole domain offline.
