Verdict:Leave Bitly when the free tier's 5 links a month is too tight, or when Core at $10 a month billed annually and Business at $90 a month are more than you need. Bitly's free plan lets you create 5 links and 2 QR codes a month, which is enough to test but not to run a business. Short.io is the easiest hosted swap: its free plan includes 1,000 branded links and 50,000 tracked clicks, and its Hobby plan costs $5 a month. Rebrandly's free plan allows 10 links and 10 QR codes a month, and its entry paid plan starts at $8 a month. Check the pricing page for the billing term. If you want no monthly fee at all, the three open-source shorteners run on your own server. Kutt and Shlink are both MIT licensed and have no link cap, but you must host them. YOURLS is simpler and has no dashboard for analytics. The real trade-off is hosting work against a hosted dashboard, so pick the self-hosted route only if you already run a server.

Bitly today: Free (2 QR codes per month, 5 links per month, 2 custom landing pages, 3 custom back-halves per month; unlimited clicks and QR code scans); paid from $10 per month, billed annually (Core plan, annual only, $120 charged yearly) (Bitly pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Bitly's Free plan gives 5 links and 2 QR codes a month, 3 custom back-halves and no branded links. Core is $10 a month but billed annually only ($120), with 100 links, 5 QR codes and 30 days of click data. Compared with Bitly: Free plan allows 10 links and 10 QR codes a month, and Essentials starts at $8 a month. It is a hosted service like Bitly, with a bigger free allowance than Bitly's 5 links a month, but it still caps links on the free tier.
