Verdict:Bartender is a paid macOS app with a 4-week trial, and it offers Bartender 7 as a one-time purchase, Bartender Pro as a yearly plan and a Mega Supporter tier; check the pricing page for amounts. If you only want a tidier menu bar, the open source options now cover most of it. Ice and Thaw are both GPL-3.0 and free; Thaw adds keyboard search and publishes separate builds for macOS 14 or 15, 26 and 27, so check which one fits your system. Hidden Bar is the lightest choice, MIT-licensed, and just hides icons. Dozer does the same under MPL-2.0 but looks unmaintained, so test it first. Vanilla is the one to pay for, at a one-time $10 for Pro with shortcuts, auto-hide and start at login. The trade-off is polish against price. Bartender has years of macOS-version fixes and a long feature list, and the free apps depend on volunteer work that may lag a new macOS release. Stay with Bartender if you need its rearranging and triggers and already own a license. Switch to Ice or Thaw if you want to stop paying and can accept occasional rough edges after an OS update.

Why people look for Bartender alternatives

Each major version is a separate purchase. Bartender 7 is a one-time license built for macOS 27, with a discounted upgrade for Bartender 6 owners, while Bartender Pro (yearly) and Mega Supporter (one-time) include future major versions. macOS 26 users are directed to Bartender 6. Showing images of menu bar items needs the Screen Recording permission; without it, Bartender shows app icons instead.
