Good fit if

  • You want $0 UI/vector tools without a Figma seat
  • Linux offline SVG handoff matters
  • You can rebuild .fig work as SVG/Penpot files

Not ideal if

  • You must keep live Figma multiplayer and Dev Mode unchanged
  • You need FigJam/organization design-system admin as-is
  • You refuse any learning curve

Short answer: for a free Figma alternative, use Inkscape for offline vector UI frames—we exported a 390×844 phone frame to PNG (8,707 bytes) with no login. For browser collaboration closest to Figma’s job, evaluate Penpot’s $0 Professional plan on penpot.app/pricing—needs signup; we did not create an account (not tested). Lunacy is free per Icons8 docs with optional cloud/graphics plans. Affinity is free for individuals per affinity.studio (docs-only). Full list: Figma alternatives.

How we ordered the tools: the tool we tested hands-on (Inkscape) comes first, then docs-only options: Penpot (closest to Figma’s browser collaboration), Lunacy and Affinity. None of these products is ours.

What free must replace

Figma’s moat is multiplayer + components + Dev Mode. Free tools usually nail vector frames and SVG ownership first. If your blocker is live cursors and organization libraries, Inkscape will feel like the wrong product—say that before cancelling seats. Role splits: Figma vs Framer (design system vs site builder), Figma vs Sketch (web multiplayer vs Mac-native), Canva vs Figma (templates vs UI).

Inkscape — free no-login UI frames (tested)

What it replaces: Figma for single-designer vector frames, icons and SVG export—especially on Linux without SaaS.

What we saw: Inkscape 1.4 rendered a hand-written SVG (dark phone frame, inputs, primary button) to PNG at 390×844 (8,707 bytes) with no network and no account. Proof of an offline UI-mock path—not auto-layout or component variants.

What it lacks: multiplayer cursors, Dev Mode inspect, FigJam, variables/modes.

Get it: inkscape.org (GPL; Windows, macOS, Linux).

Penpot — $0 browser plan (docs-only; signup wall)

penpot.app/pricing lists Professional $0/user/month and Unlimited $7/editor/month (cap on that page). Open-source collaborative UI design closer to Figma than to Canva templates. Hosted cloud still needs an account; self-host is the account-controlled path per Penpot’s materials—we did neither. Same blocker noted on free Canva alternative.

Lunacy — free desktop (docs-only)

icons8.com/lunacy lists Windows, macOS, Linux and browser. Docs: app free for personal and commercial use; personal cloud $4.99/month; graphics $9.99/month; free-tier graphics may need attribution per subscriptions docs. Markets Figma import—we did not install or import.

Affinity — free for individuals (docs-only)

get-affinity / affinity.studio: free for individuals; Windows/macOS; Canva account called out on get-affinity pages. Not a multiplayer .fig replacement.

Free migration checklist

  1. Export SVG/PDF/PNG from Figma while you still have access—.fig stays proprietary.
  2. Rebuild critical components as Inkscape symbols or Penpot components after signup/self-host.
  3. Recreate colors/type as local swatches; verify font licenses for desktop apps.
  4. If Lunacy import is tempting, try on a copy of a non-critical file (we did not verify).
  5. Keep Figma Starter for commenting if the team only needs view/comment—confirm limits on figma.com/pricing.

What we deliberately left out

Framer and Sketch are not “free Figma alternatives” in the free-tool sense—see the vs pages. Photopea and other browser clones appear on listicles; we did not test them and they are not in the tools table.

Best free Figma alternative for offline work

For offline UI work with no login, Inkscape is the pick: we exported a 390×844 phone frame to PNG with it on Linux. It does not replace Figma’s live multiplayer or Dev Mode; for browser collaboration, Penpot is the closest free option, but it needs an account and we did not test it.

How we tested

Debian 13, CPU-only. Inkscape 1.4 SVG→PNG UI frame. Penpot/Lunacy/Affinity/Figma: official pages only on 2026-10-14. No Penpot account. Same test files as Figma alternatives.

Limits of this review

No Penpot account. Lunacy and Affinity not installed. No .fig import attempt. Inkscape test is static frame SVG→PNG, not auto-layout or multiplayer.

Is Figma’s own free plan enough?
Figma Starter is Free with limits per figma.com/pricing. This page is for leaving or avoiding paid Figma seats—not a substitute for reading Figma’s limits.
Figma vs Framer or Sketch?
Different jobs—see Figma vs Framer and Figma vs Sketch.
Linux free Figma alternative?
Inkscape—the tool we ran. Lunacy lists Linux; Penpot is browser/self-host. Figma Design runs in a browser but has no native Linux desktop peer we tested.
How do these tools handle my files and privacy?
Inkscape is desktop software (open source) that we ran locally on our own machine without creating an account, so our test files stayed on that machine. We did not review the data-handling terms of Penpot, Lunacy and Affinity for this page; read each vendor’s privacy policy before uploading client files or personal data.
